April 6: The Joyful Summons

Scripture: Psalm 95:1-7a (NIV)

“Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.”

Reflection:

This passage is a vibrant call, an enthusiastic invitation to gather and focus our attention entirely on God. It’s not a suggestion, but a summons bursting with energy: “Come! Let us sing! Let us shout!” This isn’t about obligation, but exhilaration. Why? Because the One we worship is the “Rock of our salvation,” the “great God,” the Creator of everything from the deepest oceans to the highest mountains. He is immense, powerful, and utterly worthy of our praise.

Preparing our hearts for Sunday means intentionally responding to this call before we even walk through the church doors. It means consciously shifting our focus from the week’s worries, stresses, or even successes, onto the Lord Himself. How can we come before Him with thanksgiving if we haven’t taken a moment to count our blessings? How can we extol Him with music and song if our hearts are heavy with unconfessed sin or preoccupied with trivial matters?

This passage calls us to approach worship with expectation . We are coming to meet the King, our Maker, our Shepherd. He isn’t distant; He cares for us as His flock. Preparation involves reminding ourselves who we are coming to meet and who we are in relation to Him – His cherished people.

Let’s prepare by setting aside distractions, perhaps spending a few moments in quiet gratitude on Saturday evening or Sunday morning, consciously choosing to “bow down” in our hearts even before we kneel or stand together. Let’s anticipate the joy of joining our voices with others, declaring together the greatness of our God.

Prayer:

Lord God, our Maker and Shepherd, thank You for the invitation to come into Your presence with joy. Still our restless hearts and tune them to Your frequency. Help us to consciously lay aside the burdens and distractions of the week, that we might approach You with genuine thanksgiving and joyful expectation. Prepare us, individually and as a gathered people, to truly see You, adore You, and worship You as the great God You are. May Your Holy Spirit stir within us a fresh sense of wonder and gratitude as we prepare to gather in Your name. Amen.
