May 19: Monday: “Stones That Breathe 🪨💨”

In a Nutshell:

Ever feel like just another face in the crowd at church? Like your presence doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things? Think again. Today’s devotional challenges that mindset completely. What if you’re not just attending church but actually ARE the church—an irreplaceable living stone in God’s magnificent spiritual house? Your seeming insignificance might actually be the exact piece God needs to complete His masterpiece.

Anchor Verse (NIV)

“As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him—you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house.” – 1 Peter 2:4-5a

Unpacking the Word

When we think of stones, we imagine cold, lifeless objects—static, unchanging, and often unremarkable. Yet Peter uses this unexpected metaphor of “living stones” to describe believers. This seeming contradiction—stones that are somehow alive—perfectly captures the transformative nature of our identity in Christ. Unlike ordinary building materials, we aren’t simply stacked in place and left unchanged. We grow, adapt, and connect with those around us, forming something far greater than the sum of our individual parts.

Consider how a master stonemason carefully examines each unique stone, turning it this way and that, finding precisely where its particular shape fits perfectly. Some stones might appear too rough, too small, or oddly shaped—seemingly useless for building. Yet in the hands of a skilled craftsman, these very irregularities become their greatest value. That peculiar angle perfectly fills a gap; that unusual curve creates exactly needed support. Similarly, the aspects of yourself you consider flaws—your particular background, your specific struggles, your unique perspective—might be exactly what God intends to use to strengthen His church.

This spiritual house isn’t built according to standardized, uniform parts but relies on our diversity and uniqueness. Your story, your gifts, your presence matters precisely because you bring something no one else can. Pastor Shantel emphasized this truth: “Your presence matters. Your contribution matters. Your smile, your giftings, your fellowship, it all matters.” Even on days when you feel insignificant or question your value, remember that God has specifically chosen and placed you as an essential living stone in His divine architecture.

Faith in Action

Where have I been holding back from fully engaging as a “living stone” in my church community? What unique “shape” or gift do I bring that might be exactly what’s needed in God’s house? Action Step: This week, volunteer for one small act of service at church that stretches you beyond your comfort zone.

A Moment With God

“Master Builder, I confess I sometimes see myself as unimportant or replaceable in Your church. Help me recognize my value as a living stone, uniquely shaped by Your hands. Use every part of me—even what I consider flaws—to strengthen Your spiritual house. Amen.”
