May 20: Tuesday: “Home Beyond Address 🏠❤️”

In a Nutshell:

What makes a house a home? It’s not the square footage, the fancy fixtures, or the zip code—it’s the people who fill it with love and life. The same principle applies to our spiritual family. Today, we explore how God’s household transcends physical walls and postal addresses, creating a family bond that no change in location can break.

Anchor Verse (NIV)

“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household.” – Ephesians 2:19

Unpacking the Word

For many of us, our sense of belonging is often tied to physical spaces—the neighborhood where we grew up, the school we attended, the building where we worship. But Paul’s words to the Ephesians shatter this limited thinking. He tells us our true identity isn’t found in an address but in a spiritual citizenship and family membership that transcends geography. We are “no longer foreigners and strangers” but have been fully adopted into God’s household, with all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities that come with that status.

This spiritual household operates differently than worldly membership systems. As Pastor Shantel reminded us, “We’re not members of a country club, or a certain association, or a certain club that comes with prestige and membership and access, but we are members of his household, our heavenly Father’s household.” Unlike exclusive clubs with steep fees and strict requirements, God’s family welcomes the broken, the imperfect, and the unlikely. Our membership isn’t based on our achievements, social standing, or even our religious performance, but solely on Christ’s finished work.

Think about what makes family gatherings special. Is it the perfection of the venue, or is it the warmth of reconnection, shared memories, and genuine love? When church becomes primarily about a comfortable building or convenient location, we’ve missed the purpose entirely. As Pastor Shantel observed, some churches have actually split over things as trivial as carpet colors or chair designs. But a true family will cross oceans, climb mountains, and endure inconveniences to be together, because the relationship matters more than the setting. When we truly grasp that we’re family, our focus shifts from the aesthetics of a building to the authentic bonds of belonging.

Faith in Action

How have I placed more importance on the physical aspects of church than on the relational aspects? Who in my church family needs to experience a sense of genuine belonging this week? Action Step: Reach out to someone new or someone who might feel disconnected from your church family and invite them for coffee or a meal this week.

A Moment With God

“Father, thank You for adopting me into Your household. Help me value relationships over buildings, connection over convenience, and family bonds over familiar surroundings. Show me how to make others feel at home in Your house, no matter where we gather. Amen.”
