In a Nutshell
Fear has two main sources: flesh and the unknown. But there’s something fear cannot survive—the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. Before Pentecost, the disciples hid in fear. After being filled with power, they boldly proclaimed Christ despite threats. What changed? They received something greater than their fears.
Anchor Verse (NIV)
“For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’” – Romans 8:15
Unpacking the Word
Fear is perhaps the greatest witness-killer in the church today. Fear of rejection, fear of looking foolish, fear of persecution, fear of inadequacy. Before Pentecost, these same fears paralyzed the disciples. They had witnessed Jesus conquer death itself, yet they cowered behind locked doors when challenged about their association with Him.
The transformation at Pentecost wasn’t just about receiving ability—it was about receiving identity. The Holy Spirit didn’t just give them power to witness; He gave them the confident identity of beloved sons and daughters. When you know whose you are, fear loses its grip. Authority flows from intimacy with the Father, not from human courage or training.
Faith in Action
- What fears are currently hindering my witness and boldness for Christ?
- How might receiving a deeper revelation of my identity as God’s child change my confidence?
Action Step:
When fear arises this week, immediately pray “Abba, Father” and remember you’re speaking as a beloved child, not an insecure stranger.
A Moment With God
“Abba, Father, let the reality of Your love for me override every fear that tries to silence my witness. Fill me with the confidence that comes from knowing I belong to You. Amen.”
