In a Nutshell
Jesus spent 30 years being formed as a Son before 3 years of public ministry. His identity wasn’t in His works but in His relationship with the Father. When the devil tempted Him with “If you are the Son of God,” Jesus didn’t feel the need to prove itโHe already knew who He was. Do you?
Anchor Verse (NIV)
“As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’” – Matthew 3:16-17
Unpacking the Word
Identity crisis creates insecurity, and insecurity creates unhealthy leadership. When we don’t know who we are as sons and daughters, we try to prove our worth through performance, become competitive with others, and lead through control rather than love. The church is full of gifted servants who never learned to serve as sons.
Jesus could have been frustrated during His 30 years of “obscurity”โsick people were dying while He made tables in a carpenter’s shop. But His identity wasn’t tied to His ministry output. He knew He was the beloved Son whether He was healing multitudes or hammering nails. This security allowed Him to serve from love rather than need, to lead through relationship rather than position.
Faith in Action
Is my identity rooted in what I do or in whose I am? How does insecurity show up in my relationships and leadership? Action Step: Before tackling your tasks today, spend time reminding yourself: “I am God’s beloved child, and He delights in me.”
A Moment With God
“Heavenly Father, anchor my identity in Your love, not my performance. Help me serve as a son/daughter, not a slave seeking approval. Let Your delight in me be my security. Amen.”
