Fear is loud. It screams about your inadequacies, your future, and your safety. But God’s love has a voice, too, and it’s the only sound that can silence fear for good. What if the antidote to your anxiety isn’t trying harder to be brave, but simply resting deeper in the fact that you are profoundly and perfectly loved?
Anchor Verse (NIV)
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” – 1 John 4:18.
Unpacking the Word
The sermon highlighted a critical spiritual equation: the more you experience God’s love, the less power fear has over you. It’s not a formula, but a relationship. Pastor Reuben contrasted Peter, who boasted of his love for Jesus and failed, with John, who boasted of Jesus’ love for him and endured. John’s identity wasn’t “the one who loves Jesus perfectly,” but “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” This shift is everything.
When our sense of worth is rooted in how much we love God, fear and insecurity creep in. We worry we’re not doing enough, not praying enough, not being good enough. But when we are rooted and grounded in His love for us, we become secure. This security is the breeding ground for patience, kindness, and freedom from offense. It’s the “lightning rod” that protects our hearts. When fear strikes, it’s not our flimsy love that meets it, but His perfect, unshakeable love that absorbs the blow.
Faith in Action
- When fear speaks, what are the specific lies it tells me about myself or God?
- Do I introduce myself in my heart as “one who is trying to love Jesus” or “one whom Jesus loves”?
Action Step:
Find a quiet moment. Set a two-minute timer and repeat this phrase aloud: “I am a child God loves.” Notice any resistance you feel and offer it to God.
A Moment With God
“Father, root me in Your love today. Let the reality of how much You love me be louder than any fear I face. Fill me with Your fullness as I rest in that love. Amen.”
